Foundation Term One Update

Dear Families,

We have had a busy, but exciting time getting to know students during the term! We have recently completed our ‘Ready, Set, Go’ program, developing a positive classroom culture and expectations. Students have settled in well to daily routines and are developing their ability to complete daily routines independently.

In Literacy, we have begun reading rotations where students complete independent and group reading tasks focused on, how to read a book, the letters of the alphabet, beginning and ending sounds and retelling the story. Students are also increasing their stamina when completing ‘Read to Self’ focusing on reading independently and using the words and pictures to read the story.

In Mathematics, we have started to develop our counting skills, beginning with numbers 1 – 10. Students are writing numbers, identifying what numbers looks like and are beginning to add small collections together. We have worked on creating, continuing and identifying patterns using a range of classroom materials.

In Inquiry, we are studying ‘Sharing and Caring’. This unit focuses on communities, including our classroom and school community, family community and our local communities. Students have begun work on making positive friendships, being a good friend and identifying the people in our school community, their roles and ways we can be a helpful member of our school community. Foundation students are looking forward to sharing this learning with you during our ‘Celebration Circle’ in week 9.

Take Home Readers

Take home reading is an important part of our reading program and an opportunity for you to assist your child by listening to them read (words or pictures) and sharing books with them. We value your support in continuing to develop these good reading habits. Please ensure that your child brings their reading diary to school every day and that it is signed by an adult. This allows students to change their readers daily, ensuring they read a variety of books.

A reminder that with the warm weather students need a sun smart hat and a water bottle would be great.   During the day, time will be provided for students to eat a healthy snack in class. This will happen twice, at about 9:50am and 12:30pm. This needs to be something easy to eat and won’t distract the students from their work. e.g. grapes, carrot sticks, apples, orange slices etc.
